One Galax nursing home has confirmed to The Gazette that it has employees and residents who have tested positive for COVID-19, and two other local long-term care facilities have informed family members of residents about positive cases. According to a news release sent out May 22 by Galax Health & Rehab Director Wes Viers, in response to a Gazette inquiry, “Earlier this month, a contract therapy employee at Galax Health & Rehab tested positive for COVID-19. The facility immediately contacted residents, responsible parties and family members via phone calls and letters to notify them of the situation.”
The nursing home did not disclose how many staff or residents were affected.
A family member of a resident at Hillsville Health & Rehab contacted The Gazette on Tuesday and shared three letters they received from the facility. A letter dated May 19 said that “currently, we have a total of 24 positive or probable residents and 7 pending tests.”
The source said the Hillsville nursing home “first began relaying information regarding COVID-19 on April 29, upon the first positive case.”
Hillsville Health & Rehab has not responded to The Gazette’s requests for information about its coronavirus cases.
The first letter shared with The Gazette was dated May 12. It confirmed that three staff members at Hillsville Health & Rehab had tested positive for COVID-19. A subsequent letter on May 14 reported “16 positive or probable residents” with the virus.
The source told The Gazette that the three letters were received bundled together on May 22, and were followed by a phone call that evening confirming an additional positive case.Waddell Nursing & Rehabilitation in Galax also sent out […]
